Duty, Honor and Country

DUTY, HONOR AND COUNTRY: THE CIVIL WAR EXPERIENCES OF CAPTAIN WILLIAM P. BLACK, THIRTY-SEVENTH ILLINOIS INFANTRY. (Camp Pope Bookshop) Edited by Michael Banasik. Volume VI presents 119 letters written by William P. Black, Captain of Co K, 37th Illinois Infantry.

Regiments serving in the Transmississippi saw hard service. They lived in malaria infested swampy cypress areas, fought on fractured land, and marched on decrepit trials. They fought in thankless battles, key battles, and were often forgotten by the eastern media. They did some of the hardest service of the war and are, thus far, by and large, forgotten.

Captain William P. Black’s narrative brings to life one of those regiments. In over 100 letters Black covers daily life in the army, political and social issues, as well as the hard fighting the regiment endured during the Battles of Pea Ridge and Prairie Grove.

The letters are superbly edited by Michael E. Banasik whose notes add incredible depth to the letters. This is a fine book that any Transmississippi reader will want to add to their bookshelf.
