I’d like to announce a new website that I developed along with a friend who is a rather good PHP programmer. SoldierStudies.org is dedicated to the preservation of American Civil War information, particularly the correspondence and diary entries of soldiers who served in the field and elsewhere. We hope that by providing a comprehensive and searchable (database driven) archive of this information a more complete picture of one of the bloodiest chapters in American history can be better understood by researchers, historians, and students alike.
Ultimately, it’s up to the community of Civil War historians, students, teachers and enthusiasts to help preserve this information.

I have not read any of your blog, but I believe it to be a good idea. During my 30+ years of compiling bibliographies on N.C. regiments and their battles I am still somewhat amazed at what remains in private hands and only available through the
internet publishing. Soldier’s letters and diaries let everyone know what happen from the viewpoint of each soldier unfiltered through historian’s writings. Especially through the letters of the enlisted men of both sides who did the fighting and the dying and not the ‘official report-writing” memoirs, and post-justifications.
