One thing I wanted to mention during my visit to the Wisconsin Historical Archives. I looked through the daily returns of the 11th Wisconsin regiment. Here’s what happened: I opened the box and immediately the aroma of a campfire ascended from the old books. I instantly was filled with numerous visions as I turned the pages: January 25th, 1862, February 18th, March 16th, and the aroma was so pronounced that I could visualize the returns being recorded into the old book. I was literally transported back to those dates and could smell everything and hear everything going on in the camp… my senses and immagination came alive to such a degree that I must have sat there for several minutes just turning the pages, my mind lost in thought. Hopefully no one noticed.
We are now in Pennsylvania visiting my wife’s side of the family. I will report more later…
