Further Evidence of the Decline of American Exceptionalism… According to Dirty Harry!

dirtyharryRecently Clint Eastwood, famed Hollywood actor and now director / producer, was interviewed for a cover story by GQ Magazine. When asked about America today, he had some rather “pointed” [ha, ha] comments. I have enjoyed his recent films: Flags of our Fathers; Letters from Iwo Jima, Million Dollar Baby, ect. I don’t know what his political affliliation is and I don’t particularily care. I will always follow his work.

His new movie is called “Invictus,” and is the true story of Nelson Mandela.  During the interview he had this to say:

“The world needs this kind of story nowadays,” Eastwood said. “It’s just…everybody’s so screwed up. It seems like our country’s in kind of a morbid mood, because of the recession or whatever.”

We’re “becoming more juvenile as a nation,” he said. “The guys who won World War II and that whole generation have disappeared, and now we have a bunch of teenage twits.” [Read more]

Now when he says, “teenage twits,” I would assume (due to his advanced age) he is speaking of those 40 and 50 year olds (both Democrat and Republican)  now running the country!?

  1. Pam Walter says:

A friend of mine has said that he’s looking forward to the next elections and when the “grown ups” will be in charge again.

  2. “now we have a bunch of teenage twits.” That pretty much sums it up. The ruling class constantly administers Botox for the brain in their never-ending pursuit of “cool.”

  3. How I always love Clint! (I don’t have a clue about his personal political affiliations, either, and I like it that way.) I agree with him, of course, in general, but with a certain counterbalance. My area of particular research is the Revolutionary/early federal period, which offers no lack of juvenile, petty, disingenuous, and outright vicious behavior — along with much, much finer stuff. The petty never goes away. In my view, it is simply a question of whether there is something GREAT and INSPIRING for people to focus on as well; the existence of such doesn’t eliminate low, mean, or defeatist attitudes and actions (sometimes it even spawns as many of them as it avoids), but, when it survives its infancy, it towers above the rest. And so I’m obviously also ALL for Clint offering up an inspiring story! I think he’s spot-on that it is exactly what people need. Always. And particularly now.

I’m looking forward to some sanity, but then again, we had 8 years of Republicans in executive office and now 4 years of Democrat rule in Congress, I dread them all…

  5. I would like to see Libertarians take control of Congress and the White House for about 4 years. Then, after they’ve repealed most of the nonsensical legislation, I’d like to see a conservative Republican in the White House, moderate Dems in control of the House, and Libertarians in control of the Senate. That, I believe, would provide a good balance and keep everyone on their toes and honest.

Very little else could get done and that would be political heaven, at least from this Burkean conservative’s perspective.
